West Marine - Fort Lauderdale

Client: Stiles Architecture / Stiles Corporation

Scheduled to open in September 2011 the new West Marine features a 60,000 SF retail building on a 4.5 acre site just south of downtown Fort Lauderdale. 

BTE was responsible for all civil engineering design, permitting and construction administration.

Permitting agencies having jurisdiction were:

• City of Fort Lauderdale
• Broward County Health Department
• Florida Department of Transportation
• Broward County Highway and Construction Engineering
• Broward County Traffic Engineering
• Broward County Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department.

Design and construction required the team to overcome several challenges typical to re-development of an existing site such as:

• Working around existing utilities – FPL, storm drainage and sanitary sewer.
• Unforeseen subsurface conditions discovered during construction (several large grease traps and septic drain fields)
• Coordination with adjacent property owners (throughout construction the drainage connection from the adjacent site had to be maintained).
