West Lake Park - Habitat Improvements

West Lake Park, located just south of Port Everglades on the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway, is a mostly natural coastal wetland with dense plant cover, paths, and canal networks throughout the property. The coastal portion of the Habitat Improvement effort encompasses over 3-miles of shore protection measures aimed at protecting the natural resources of the park from erosion.  Utilizing hydrographic surveys as well as current and water surface data logging, BTE evaluated deleterious effects of boat wakes, wind waves, and storm surge currents using state-of-the-art computer models. The computer models used were ADCIRC for regional wind, wave, and current analysis, STWAVE for localized wind wave simulation, RMA2 and RMA4 for localized hydrodynamic modeling and current determination as well as M2D for sediment transport analysis.

Phase 1 currently under construction is approximately 1 mile at a cost of $8M.  Completion is scheduled for July 2011.
